Redemption
Ryuu was aching. His every bone, every joint was crying out with each movement.
"Damn it Nobu," he groaned, "You're bumping up and down so much on purpose, aren't you?"
"Whiners can carry their own crippled ass back to base," came the curt reply, followed by an intentional jolt. Ryuu hissed in pain.
"I wouldn't be in this state had you waited for my plan instead of bullrushing the enemy."
"Why the hell should I follow your orders?" Another deliberate bounce. Another grimace. Another failed mission.
"We're a unit. We're supposed to be working as a team-- Agh!"
Nobu had halted abruptly, sending jolts of pain through Ryuu's battered body.
"We are not a team," he growled. "You and I, will never be a team." He resumed his walk, a deliberate lurch now accompanying each step.
Ryuu winced and gritted his teeth. "Look, we've already been assigned..." He trailed off, a memory was suddenly coming back.
Their crew of five was chewing on fruit and bread. A boy stood watching them from a short distance. It had been days since his last meal. A thief working alone, especially at this age, had little chance on the streets.
"I'm hungry," the boy called. "Can I join your team?"
The one with goggles turned, considering him. "I suppose another guy wouldn't hurt..."
"No," interrupted the brunette. "We don't need more people."
Was that it? All these years? All because of inconsiderate words from a foolish child?
"Sorry Nobu. You can join."
"I have no idea what you're talking about."
The lurching ceased.
I just wanted to say that I absolutely adored this little story. The last three lines were just so... perfect. I don't really know how to explain it.
