Ten/Nyo fanfic

Author: Letiel

Tenrou watched the sentry from beneath the hood of his cloak pulled up to protect him from the cold and icy breeze. Winter would soon be coming dragging behind a veil of crystalline ice and a deep sleep. His golden eyes followed every movement with a steady, unwavering gaze. Every step, every twitch, every yawn neatly catalogued away for future reference.

There! The guard closed his eyes only briefly, a split second for Ten to move from his place in the tall grass to the base of the tree near the wall. He stopped, listening to the guard pace and waiting. The wind picked up for a moment shaking the leaves. Ten quickly leaped up to the tree branches swinging onto the farthest arm in the canopy, stopping when the wind died. The leaves shook and slowly stopped moving.
The seconds ticked by turning into minutes until once again the breeze tugged at the leaves. Tenrou dashed along the branch and leaped over the wall landing with a gentle thump. His cloak settled around him for a second before he moved again blending with the shadows against the wall. Crouched behind a bush Ten noticed a slight movement and a brief flash of bright gold. He bolted over to Nyo settling down in the dust beside him.

Tucking away the headband, Nyo motioned to the second story window, pointing first to the point of entry, and then where the wall met another to form a corner. Ten nodded in acknowledgment motioning to Nyo to lead. A quick nod and Nyo bolted across the lush grass careful to distribute his weight evenly from foot to foot. Careful not to slip on the moist stone Nyo ran along the wall to the corner bouncing from wall to wall in an upward motion catching the sill in a final leap. He perched there checking the hallways and motioning for Ten.

Tenrou followed, making sure not to step in the exact same places as Nyo. Not a minute later the pair dropped into the darkened hallway. The two nearest braziers were out, the fire blown away by the late autumn winds. They slipped into the shadows hugging the wall while moving swiftly down the wall. Their shadows danced in the light of the flames lit along the wall a little ways down. The contorted, movements threatening to betray them.

“I’m telling you it’s too late to be wandering empty halls,” the voice echoed.

“Someone has to keep watch.”

Ten and Nyo immediately pressed against the walls, hiding on opposite sides against the same arch. The footsteps grew closer, louder. Ten quickly looked about searching for an escape or a better hiding spot at least. Nyo flashed his hands pointing up. Ten nodded. Together they climbed up to the rafters clinging to the beams.

The guards walked along chatting with each other just passing the stone arches. Ten breathed a silent sigh of relief glad that they’d be moving on their merry way. A high-pitched clink echoed, thunder in the near empty hallway. Ten stared at Nyo, now pale and clearly irritated at having dropped one of his precious trinkets. The guards spun around on their heels drawing their swords.

Ten sighed again. So much for a smooth mission.

Nyo dropped from the rafters drawing twin katar and slicing the throats of both guards in a quick motion. Their bodies crumpled to the ground in a heap of metal of and flesh.

“Someone will have heard that,” Ten commented, dropping down besides Nyo.
Nyo shrugged, “I’d rather not lose this.” He picks up the trinket and slips it into his pocket. They took off down the hall, not another word between them.

Two minutes later an alarm sounded, guards mobilized, and the castle was awake and in a flurry waiting for orders.

“Sir! Sir!” the assistant captain exclaimed barging into the room. “Sir! I think we-!” The Captain was dead.

Ten walked quietly down the path, Nyo tromping alongside inspecting a particularly fine piece of jewelry stolen from off the captain’s person.

“That fetish of yours nearly got us killed.”

Nyo laughed, “No gold isn’t worth risking your life for.”
Ten snorted. They walked a little ways, hoods down to enjoy the night.

“We got what we came for didn’t we?” Nyo asked.

Ten hefted the bag over his shoulder, “I guess we did.”
